Aly’s Owl by Donna Halpin

3rd Place, Professional Non-Original Without Instruction

When my granddaughter asked, “Grandma, when will you sew something for me?” I immediately forced myself out of my comfort zone, set aside my “serious” pieces and searched for a canvas that would be perfect for Aly. And what is her nickname? Yes…of course, it’s Owly.

I used Sparkle Braid, Wildflowers, overdyed pearl cotton, a bit of Fuzzy Stuff, and silk floss—and with a great deal of mind over matter, Aly’s Owl was stitched and finished. It is a treasure for her. As for me, my father would say, “Doing what you’re not comfortable doing builds character.” And as you will note, Aly’s Owl also has character.
