Homage to the Sea by Cheryl Christian

I’ve always found the color of the seas and the oceans mesmerizing, meditative, and calming. There is something about the range of blues that fascinates. I’m particularly drawn to the blue-greens and teals of the Caribbean and so appreciate the work of Winslow Homer, who could capture the color in his vibrant watercolors.

This simple piece is an attempt to get at the depth of color in those waters. Fabric and threads were sandwiched between layers of water soluble film, machine stitched to connect the pieces, then the film was dissolved in water. Hand stitching with a variety of novelty threads and beads work to depict both the movement of the water and a bit of sun’s gracious sparkle on it.
