First Place, Professional Original; The Delores Andrew Award

The sun rises over Arizona’s Bright Angel Canyon, defining wind sculptures, mesas, and rich colors. Hand stitches emphasize the ridges and brow of the deepest fissure.

Velvet stitch added to soluble fabric work creates dark foreground pinon and Crown of Thorns cacti. Fabrics from the Santa Fe Opera costume department are augmented with batiks and a nuno felted foreground fabric from Daphne Sherman.

The technique is fabric collage with soluble fabric work and nuno felting in silk, cotton, linen, rayon, and polyester, hand and machine stitching.
