Hardanger Ribbons is a Janice Love pillow pattern of the same name. The idea of woven ribbons was popular at the time so the design was created in this form to acquaint the stitcher with Hardanger embroidery and its many filling stitches. This piece is of an intermediate-advanced level of Hardanger.
The original pattern design used a variety of pastel-colored pearl cottons on Hardanger cloth. Instead I chose a monochromatic color scheme using Davos cloth and 7 colors of DMC taupe pearl cotton threads in #5, #8, and #12. I also chose to stitch each ribbon pattern in a different color combination of the taupes. I organized the color patterns so that no two ribbons have the same color scheme!
This sampler style pattern allows the stitcher not only to learn the basics of the Hardanger embroidery, but also to become accomplished in the many filling stitches and weaving techniques used in the design. In stitching this piece, I became passionate about Hardanger embroidery!
