Originally created as a teaching piece for the 2015 Callaway School of Needlearts seminar, Patches the Penguin is a whimsical table-top decoration adorned with a patchwork of compound geometric stitches in black, violet, and indigo.

The patterns on his front, back, and wings are created by tonal and textural contrast with metallic, silks, velvets, and cottons. His beak and feet are manipulated and appliquéd Ultrasuede® accented by glass beads. The wings are held in place by embedded earth magnets, which allow the wings to pivot in place or to be removed for storage.
