Oval Box Top by Rachel Watkins

I have two passions, stitching and porcelain painting, these often overlap in my art as one influences the other.

In the case of this porcelain box the two art forms came together. While painting this lovely 6” oval box I broke the lid. I decide to make a cardboard lid and decorate it with Stumpwork embroidery. The painted base has various water scenes painted around it along with shells, the top is decorated with miscellaneous found objects and Stumpwork sea creatures. The lid decoration includes needlelace, beads and shells, three rocks that are painted pieces of an egg carton, and one rock of open weave fabric painted and gathered into a circle.
